The
Board of Trustees of The Appalachian
Community Development Association (The A.C.D.A.) would
like to invite you to become a sponsor of The
Appalachian Festival. This
year marks the 40th installment of the largest celebration
of Appalachian Culture held outside of the Appalachian
Region itself. The event’s scheduled to be held
Mother’s
Day weekend, May 8, 9 & 10, 2008 at
historic Coney
Island Park in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Since 1974, the Festival has been
under the auspices of The A.C.D.A., a non-profit
organization, whose purpose is to promote the educational,
cultural, and social well being of the Appalachian
population of Greater Cincinnati. The Appalachian Festival
began in 1970 as a project of The Junior League
of Cincinnati. At least 34%
of Greater Cincinnati area residents claim Appalachian
roots, by being 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even 4th generation
Appalachian migrants
The
Appalachian Festival provides a marketplace
for traditional hand-made Appalachian Crafts. It fosters
a sense of pride among Appalachian Migrants in the
Greater Cincinnati area and celebrates it’s rich
cultural treasures. We present the annual festival
and share the revenue through a small grants program.
Festival proceeds are reinvested back into the community
throughout the year through school, community group
and individual artisan projects promoting Appalachian
Arts. However, during the last 3 years, the organization
has been unable to award any grants due to decreased
projected profits. Our event’s
suffered substantial financial losses and is in considering
canceling the event, unless corporations and individuals
can “step up to the plate” to help continue
this rich cultural tradition for Greater Cincinnati’s
area residents.
During the weekend, approximately 25,000 patrons
visit the festival, including 5,000 grade school children
attending to learn about Appalachian Culture & Arts
on Friday, May 8th. Over 200 volunteers assist
The A.C.D.A. Board of Trustees and the festival committee
members with the planning and on-site coordination
of the event..
